Enrollment numbers continue to increase as the school advances as a university

Reading Time: 2 minutes In the first State of the University address, Elizabeth Hitch, Interim President, said that the spring semester brought an additional 1,700 students on top of the 2,800 student increase during the fall semester. The number of minority students is also increasing for the school; there has been a 32 percent increase in African American students, and a 25 percent increase in Hispanic/Latino students.

Tickets are $9 for one night or $16 for both and can be purchased at the Outdoor Adventure Center.

Reading Time: 2 minutes In an effort to help young Latino students prepare for college, UVU student volunteers and faculty members hosted local eighth graders last week. Around 36 Latino eighth graders from Centennial Middle School in Provo came to UVU as part of the school’s Latino Outreach program.

Reading Time: < 1 minute Jan. 27 – MEDICAL – A 59-year-old female tripped over a large chunk of ice in parking lot “V” and struck her head on the asphalt. The woman was transported by ambulance to a local hospital for further treatment. Jan. 28 – MEDICAL – A 29-year-old transient male fell ill with flu-like symptoms at the Digital Learning Center.

The real “Rain Man” visits campus

Reading Time: 2 minutes Everyone remembers the 1988 Oscar Award-winning movie, Rain Man starring Dustin Hoffman and Tom Cruise, but few people realize the movie was based on an actual person, a Salt Lake City resident, no less. Students had the chance to meet and question Kim Peek last week when he visited campus to share his miraculous story and special gift.

Hundreds of students from universities across the state rallied the State Capitol Jan. 30 due to proposed state legislature budget cuts to higher education. Jackson Olsen, executive vice president of Utah State University’s student government association, emceed the event by introducing members of the legislature supporting the cause of protesters.

Second chance for Twelfth Night

Reading Time: 2 minutes Twelfth Night, which was performed at UVU in December, is making a second showing this month at Scera Center for the Arts. Don’t go to this event expecting a run-of-the-mill Shakespeare play — director John Graham has designed the performance around a French European 1920s classic chic concept, mixed in with a few punk and emo elements.
