April 6, 2009

Reading Time: 2 minutes Citing the anniversaries of powerful Utah earthquakes in Ogden (May 1914) and Kosomo (March 1934), Govorner John Huntsman has declared April 2009 to be “Earthquake Preparedness Month.” Utah’s rich history of earthquakes from St. George to the Idaho border is reason enough to be prepared, and Huntsman said the prospect of a major earthquake keeps him up at night.

Expert African Dance Teacher Makes Annual Visit

March 30, 2009

Reading Time: 2 minutes Last Wednesday, dance students and passers-by in the PE hall stumbled across a rather unusual sight: the energetic Kim Strunk, UVU dance instructor extraodinaire, was struggling to keep up in dance with an older woman who had a cast on her foot. That woman was Mabiba Baegne, on her annual tour around the country, stopping in to grace us with her talents and to teach the willing – and the very nimble – the simple- looking yet deceptively complicated traditional African dances.

A Conversation with Rocky Anderson

March 30, 2009

Reading Time: 2 minutes Utah’s Rocky Anderson is known far and wide, as an advocate for human rights, a political ally, and as an unapologetic liberal. On March 25th, he lectured at UVU on the High Road for Human Rights advocacy project. The goal of the project is to empower individuals through this grassroots community effort to mobilize the political will to fulfill the promise of “Never Again,” as seen on the monument in Dachau, Germany.

Infant Genius Refuses to Change Own Diaper

March 30, 2009

Reading Time: 2 minutes Mr. and Mrs. Locke sat petrified on their sofa and watched their daughter Genny with frozen stares. The toddler is not yet two years old, but she is swearing at the contestants on Jeopardy! with undisguised contempt. “Moron! How the hell could you possibly mistake Newton’s Laws for Einsteinian theory?!” she yelled.

UVU Review Staff Meeting Erupts in Violence

March 30, 2009

Reading Time: 2 minutes A dispute over whether to publish an article on a cursed bowling ball or a half- page photo of a child’s homemade cookie that sort of looked like the Virgin Mary caused a newsroom brawl Monday. Photographer Trent Bates’ face reddened in a deep scowl as he hooked Life editor Mel Sundquist in a headlock.

A Little Respect

March 16, 2009

Reading Time: 2 minutes History means a lot to me and my fellow wannabe Historians. It is difficult to imagine the collective impact of the countless lives of those who have contributed to who we are today. So when I went to the historical cemetery near Camp Floyd in Fillmore and found beer cans and trash on the ground by the monument, I was a mite peeved.

Ol’ Buttars strikes again

March 2, 2009

Reading Time: 2 minutes If you don’t live under a rock with a blanket over your head and your hands clapped over your ears, you’ve probably heard about the nonsense going on in the Utah Senate. We’re in an uproar – again – over yet another outlandish, biased, and downright inappropriate statement uttered by Senator how-does-he-keep-getting-reelected Chris Buttars.
