During the hustle and bustle of the first week of school, be sure to leave time for some fun. UVUSA has put together four days worth of events to welcome students back to campus. “It’s been a tradition since it has been a university,” said Cori Fox, fine arts chair of UVUSA. The Student Life Branch of UVUSA, consisting of 5 UVUSA representatives and 60-70 volunteers, has been planning these events since April.
Festivities will kick off on Tuesday, Aug. 30 with a BBQ at noon in the Courtyard featuring John Allred in concert. John Allred, a native of Hartford, Conn., and his band named simply “Allred” became popular in 2002. According to their Myspace page, Allred has sold over 35,000 records. Their most recent single “All We Are” was released in Sept. 2010. The BBQ costs $3 and is free for MAWL members. When asked about the event she’s looking forward to the most, Fox said the BBQ concert. “It’s a great chance for people to come and relax and meet people,” Fox said. “It’s a good mingling activity.”
Tuesday will also feature the biggest event of the week—the Green-Out Dance. Starting at 9:00 p.m. and going till midnight, students can dance their hearts out in the UCCU Center. However, it’s not called the Green-Out Dance for nothing. Students wearing green get in for only $3. Those without green attire must fork over $5. This is also the only event that will require a student I.D. card to gain admittance.
The night of Aug. 31 brings True Wolverine at 11:30 p.m. in the Courtyard. For those unfamiliar with the True Wolverine Tradition, just be prepared to pucker up. “True Wolverine is a UVU tradition where in order to become a ‘True Wolverine,’ you stand on a platform in the waterfall in the courtyard and kiss the person of your choosing,” Fox said, describing the event. The free event is expected to draw a crowd of 500 plus people. Single students do not have to feel left out at True Wolverine. If anyone feels especially daring, grab someone cute, with their consent of course, and lay one on them
Thursday, Sept. 1 will host a movie night, old school drive-in style. Out on the free parking lot by the Testing Center, the movie “Thor” will be projected on a screen for students and families to enjoy. The movie will start at 9:00 p.m. and costs $1 per person or $5 per car.
The week also gives students a chance to get involved. “If you enjoy the week and want to get involved in planning similar events,” Fox said, “go to the UVUSA offices in SC 105 and get a committee member sign-up form.”
The first week of school can be stressful. But with UVUSA hard at work, students can manage to squeeze in a bit of fun amongst the chaos.
