The UVU Outdoor Adventure Center will host the world renowned Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour this week, with feature films at the Ragan Theater.
Named for Banff, Canada’s oldest national park, the Banff Mountain Film Festival features some of the best documentary footage on mountain subjects in the world.
Beginning in 1976, the festival has been held annually on the first weekend in November in Banff, Alberta, Canada. The films can be anywhere from fifteen to fifty-five minutes in length.
After November, selected films from the festival tour the globe, from Austria and Argentina to Iceland and India. Each tour location chooses the films that reflect local interests, making a unique celebration in each community where the tour travels.
The UVU Outdoor Adventure Center will benefit from the proceedings; roughly fifty percent of the festival’s tour screenings benefit outdoor programs, community causes and nonprofit organizations.
On February 10th and 11th, the festival will feature several different films: Crux, which won the People’s Choice Award for Radical Reels; The Fine Line, a film about winter sports and responsibility in the backcountry; The Last Frontier – Papua New Guinea, which documents the indigenous culture and environment of New Britain during a caving and kayaking expedition; Seasons, which won the Special Jury Award; The Sharp End, about explores in Eastern Europe; Under the Influence, which covers top riders in Jackson Hole and Alaska; The Unbearable Lightness of Skiing, covering a season of backcountry skiing, and Journey to the Center, a film about world-renowned BASE jumpers at Tian Keng that won Best Film on Mountain Sports.
Tickets are available at the Outdoor Adventure Center in the Student Center. Tickets are $9 per night, or $16 if both nights are purchased at the same time. There will be different films on each night, so be sure to check the schedules so that you can catch as many films as you can.
