Utah Valley’s women’s golf team opened the 2014 season with a bang as they earned a share of the tournament title at the Wildcat Invitational which took place on Friday at Davis Park Golf Course in Kaysville, UT. The lady Wolverines also set the school record for the lowest team score with a 292 (8 under-par) besting the pervious school record by four strokes.

The team earned a share of the team title by tying with the Weber State Wildcats since both teams  carded 292’s to win the tournament. The victory marks UVU’s third tournament win at the NCAA Division 1 level. Their pervious wins were earned by a share of the title at the Bobcat Invitational two years ago and their first ever out right team victory a last year’s Wildcat Invitational.

Sophomore Kimberly Nyhus led the was for the Wolverines by recording her first-ever collegiate victory: individual medalist honors with an even-par 71. Nyhus shot under par all afternoon before a tree got in her way on 17 and left her double-bogeying the whole.

Behing Nyhus, senior Hannah Herman tied for fourth with a 73. Next was fellow senior Heather Mathison and junior Cassandra Lesa tying for sixth with a 74. While sophomore Monica Yeats rounded out the field by tying for 18th with a 79.

Five teams took part in Friday’s tournament. Behind UVU and WSU where: Southern Utah in third with 299, Westminster in fourth with 333, and Idaho State coming in fifth with 340.

Utah Valley’s women’s golf will now prepare to host the Hobble Creek Fall Classic on September 8-9 on Hobble Creek Golf Course in Springville, Utah. The tournament will be the Wolverines’ single home outing for the season.
