Former UV pitcher Kam Mickolio was called up to Major League Baseball by the Baltimore Orioles last week and with his first appearance will become the first UVU player to play in a big-league game.
“From where Kam started to where he is now is a testament to how hard he’s worked,” said Utah Valley Baseball coach Eric Madsen, who coached Mickolio as a head coach at Eastern Utah for one season and two seasons as an assistant at Utah Valley. “He’s a great kid and he worked at it and kept after it, and I’m just so excited for him and for our program.”
The Bozeman Montana native pitched at Utah Valley in 2005 and 2006, throwing two shutouts during his senior season for the Wolverines.
He was drafted in the 18th round of the 2006 MLB Draft by the Seattle Mariners and later traded to Baltimore in a deal that sent pitcher Erik Bedard to Seattle.
Mickolio began the 2008 season at double-A Bowie, where he was 2-1 with 4.70 ERA. Most recently he was pitching at triple-A Norfolk where he had just a 1.50 ERA with two saves. He had allowed runs in just two of his 15 appearances while striking out 20 batters in 18 innings.
