The fast-paced, action-packed show that is arena football is coming to Utah Valley and will play in the McKay Center starting in March of 2009. The UV Thunder will compete in the Arena Indoor Football Association under the tutelage of first-year head coach Chad DeGrenier, who played in the Arena League for seven years.

“I couldn’t have picked a better situation,” DeGrenier said of his position.

The Thunder is the latest team to be announced in a league that has been expanding to the west coast. Utah Valley will compete in the western division along with the Wyoming Cavalry, Albuquerque Wildcats, Arizona Adrenaline and a team that has yet to be announced in Ogden.

Team owner Dave Affleck introduced the team and the new logo at a press conference held last week. The team will feature several players from BYU and Utah State who are looking to further their careers.

While it’s a far cry from UVU having a football team, it should appease the appetites of football fans on campus, especially come March when the crack-of-the-pads has become a distant memory.

The Thunder will join the Utah Flash and the Orem Owls as minor league teams that play their home games at UVU.
