Men’s basketball

For the second consecutive week and fourth time this season, Ryan Toolson has been named the men’s basketball Independent Player of the Week.

In two games Toolson averaged 20.5 points for the Wolverines. Toolson hit on 41 percent of his three pointers (7-of-17) and 94 percent of his foul shots (16-of-17) in guiding the Wolverines to a 1-1 record.

In Utah Valley’s win over Cal State Bakersfield, the junior scored a game high 32 points in 32 minutes of playing time. Toolson hit on 8-of-14 shots from the field and 6-for-11 from behind the 3-point line, including a late banker with the shot clock running out to give Utah Valley a six-point lead with under five minutes remaining.

For the season, Toolson is eighth in the nation in scoring (22.8 points per game) and leads the nation in free throw shooting at 96 percent (96-of-100).

Track and field

Seven Utah Valley men and three women placed in the top-five in their respective events as the Wolverine track team competed at the Snake River Invitational.

Mariama Salifu led the Wolverines women sprinters with a pair of top-two finishes. Salifu finished first in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.67 seconds, and finished second in the 200-meters, posting a time of 25.76.

Alise Lindsey highlighted the middle distance events for the women, as the freshman took sixth in the 800 meters running in 2:19. Chelsea Loss and Mary Nothum finished third and fourth in the mile run with respective times of 5:06.62 and 5:07.10. Mel Baird set a personal record in the mile running a 5:14.42.

In the women’s field events, jumper Ashley Timo had her second consecutive stellar week, finishing fourth in both the high jump and the long jump.

Throwers Nadine Russell and Jordan Harris finished in the top six in the weight throw. Russell finished fifth with a heave of 41.2 feet while Harris recorded a throw of 38.10, good for a sixth place finish.

On the men’s side, distance runners Chase Englestead and Jake Buhler highlighted the track events. Englestead finished third in the mile run with a time of 4:03.60. Buhler checked in with a time of 8:46.50 in the 3000 meters.

Kiefer Collins also finished in the top-five on the men’s side. Collins finished fourth in the high jump.
