The Writing Center is available to all students and free of charge unlike most similar services at other universities. Whether you need help with an English paper, a history essay or a biology report, the center has several qualified tutors from a variety of backgrounds and majors to help you with your paper.
The tutors are also available to assist with writing-related matters outside of academics such as a resume or letter for graduate school. Tutors can also help ESL students with grammar or practice conversation skills.
The Writing Center is primarily for content concerns such as thesis statements, conclusions, introductions and so forth. They examine arguments and make suggestions on improving or clarifying points. Tutors also help with citing sources and compiling bibliographies.
Tutors can explain grammatical principles if there is a prominent problem throughout your paper, such as comma usage or misspelled words. Rather than correcting each of these mistakes, the tutor will explain the principle and go through a couple of mistakes with you.
Tutors cannot edit, proofread or correct papers for grammar (although grammatical concerns may be focused on with ESL students), nor can they give grade estimates. The center makes better writers, not necessarily better papers.
It is required to make an appointment for a tutorial on the schedule. One tutorial is 20 minutes; in that time a tutor can go through a two to four page paper, but anything longer may require a second appointment. You may make two appointments in a row, but each student is allotted only two tutorials a day.
The Writing Center is located in the new library in room 208. It is open on Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., closes early at 5 p.m. on Fridays, and is open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays.
