An 8-8 tie against Cal was the best the baseball team could muster last weekend in Northern California in their season opening games.

After dropping the first game of the doubleheader to the Bears 12-1, Utah Valley drove in six runs in the top of the third in game two after Adam Openshaw double scored Scott Croshaw and Jace Brinkerhoff.

The lead wouldn’t last after a three-run blast in the bottom of the eighth put the Bears up 8-7. Utah Valley would tie it up in the ninth when Kai Hatch doubled to lead off the inning and later scored after a bases loaded walk.

The game was called in the ninth due to darkness, preserving the tie for the Wolverines. Utah Valley finished the weekend 0-3-1, recording their first tie while playing at the Division 1 level.

In the Wolverines’ first two games against Santa Clara, Utah Valley lost 12-2 and 7-2. Utah Valley’s first game in Utah County will take place when the Wolverines play at BYU on March 11. Their first home game isn’t until March 25, against the University of Utah.
