NIPOMO, Calif. — For the third time this year, the Utah Valley University men’s golf team finished a tournament second or better.

Behind three top 12 finishes from freshman Michael Dart (T8), Mason Casper (T12) and Joey Olson (T12), the Wolverines vaulted from fifth place to second at the Firestone Grill Invitational Monday at the Monarch Dunes Golf Club.

Dart fired his second 71 of the tournament to finish three-over par to lead the Wolverines in his second college start.

“Mike played really solid. It was a great way to start his college career,” UVU men’s golf coach Chris Curransaid.

Casper and Olson carded final-round 72s. Stratton Schulz, who finished tied for 29th, shot a final-round 76, while Andrew Carlin finished tied for 56th.

Cal-State Fullerton won the event with a team total of 861, while UVU was second with an 879 and Seattle and UC Riverside finished tied for third at 882.

“If we could have got off to a better start we might have won the event,” Curran said. “It was a tough course and we threw away too many shots around the green.”

Earlier in the year, the Wolverines won the Battle in the Tetons and finished second at the Palouse Collegiate.
