The coaching carousel started early this season with Atlanta, but it is was just getting started. Cam Cameron lost his job at Miami after winning just one game, so the Dolphins will have a new head man next season. Last week Joe Gibbs resigned as the Washington Redskins head coach, leaving a vacancy there. Atlanta’s Bobby Petrino bailed after just 13 games coaching the Falcons to take the head coaching job at Arkansas. Brian Billick lost his job in Baltimore as well after nine years and a Super Bowl XXXV win.
College football
Louisiana State took care of business after the wildest college football season ever to win the BCS National Championship by thumping Ohio State in a watered down version of the final game. Making more news was Georgia President Michael Adams. Adams is calling for a eight-team playoff to take place after opposing a playoff for 20 years. His Bulldogs were one of the teams passed over for the championship game and Georgia finished No. 2 in the AP Poll. Who doesn’t doubt Georgia, USC, or West Virginia could have given LSU a better game in the championship. Adams is coming to this realization because Georgia missed out. Would he be saying the same thing if Georgia lost to Hawaii?
Track and Field
Deny, deny, deny, confess was track star Marion Jones path to admitting to steroids use. Jones was sentenced to six months in prison for lying about steroid use and for being involved in a check-fraud scam. The former Olympian’s term begins March 11. U.S. District Judge Kenneth Karas said the maximum sentence under Marion’s plea deal was given to send a message to athletes. Jones admitted to using steroids last October after long denying all such charges. She said she used steroids from September 2000 to July 2001. Jones returned her Olympic Medals and the International Olympic Committee erased her results from the books.
