Wolverines Finish ReBath Snowman Getaway in 12th

Utah Valley finished its first tournament of the 2010 spring golf season in 12th place at the ReBath Snowman Getaway at Whirlwind Golf Club’s Cattail Course.

Noah Cook was the top finisher for the Wolverines, finishing in 48th place after a final round 79. Dane Christensen tied for 52nd and had UVU’s low round of the tournament, a 74, on Tuesday.

Host Washington State won the team title by seven shots over Missouri while UMKC’s Brett Iliff took home medalist honors, finishing two shots better than a pair of golfers.

The Wolverines shot 306-321-308 in the three rounds and were four strokes behind Gonzaga for 11th place overall and 19 in front of Bradley.

Utah Valley’s next tournament will be March 11-12 at the Bandon Dunes Championship in Bandon, Ore.

Wyatt Ray Wins Final 2009-10 WWC Wrestler of the Week Award

Utah Valley 141-pound redshirt freshman Wyatt Ray (Roy, Utah/Roy H.S.) has been named the Western Wrestling Conference’s Wrestler of the Week as announced by the league on Tuesday.

Ray picked up a huge win for the Wolverines last week in UVU’s 25-10 victory over Northern Colorado in Greeley. He defeated the reigning WWC Wrestler of the Week, Northern Colorado’s Kenny Hashimoto, and earned his first dual victory of the season. Hashimoto is ranked No. 12 in the NCAA RPI and No. 21 in the most recent NCAA Coaches’ Panel list.

Ray took the early 2-0 lead over Hashimoto as he scored a quick takedown. Hashimoto then tied the score early in the second at two-apiece. Ray picked up an escape point in the third and a takedown to go up 5-2. He then held on to spoil Hashimoto’s senior night as he beat him by decision, 5-4.

Wolverine wrestlers continue to cruise

The Wolverine wrestling team took a victory of 25-10 on February 17, this time at Northern Colorado.

Utah Valley’s 125-pound Ben Kjar was able to defeat the Bear’s Tony Mustari in a close call resulting 6-5.

Wyatt Ray, a freshmen weighing 141 pounds lead a take down against Northern Colorado’s Kenny Hashimoto 5-4.

Justin Morril dominated the Bear’s Justin Gonzales in a match ending at 7-1. This gave Utah Valley a lead of 9-6.

Jeb Clark, Brad Darrington, Monte Schmalhaus and Josh Wood all had similar victories throughout the event and aided in defeating the Bears on their own territory.

The Utah Valley grapplers will next compete in the WWC Championships March 6 in South Dakota.
