After traveling to Nevada, Nebraska and Illinois in the month of December, the UVU wrestling team continues to maintain a high standard of competition.

“The season is going great,” said coach Greg Williams. “We are still undefeated in duals and the guys are progressing.”

Over Christmas break five of the team members were invited to compete in the Midlands invitational, unfortunately only four were able to attend due to injury. Ben Kjar, a junior weighing in at 125 pounds, proved to be a tough competitor beating seventh ranked Jared Garnett from Virginia Tech. Kjar placed fifth and is nationally ranked. He has three teammates near that point.

Also significantly progressing this season is Flint Ray, a junior weighing 133 pounds. Ray competed in the Las Vegas Invite and had an exciting victory over his competitor, Kevin Smith from the University of Buffalo, who was ranked eleventh in the nation.

Coach Williams expects the team to continue to progress throughout the remainder of the season. “We are looking forward to the challenge of wrestling several ranked teams in duals during the next month,” said Williams. “These matches are important in getting our individuals ready to win at conference to qualify for the NCAA tournament in March.”

“We’re wrestling the best we can,” stated Williams. “In all duals you have an idea if you’ll win or not. We’re not getting caught up in that.” Williams said that the team is prepared for what lies ahead and plans to wrestle to the best of their abilities.
