I’m a current UVU student and I love this school. I love the entire atmosphere of this wonderful university. But I always hate walking by the library or somewhere else on campus and have to cough through the areas where people are smoking.

I understand that this is legal as long as they are not within 25 feet, due to the Clean Air Act. But I believe we should make UVU a smoke free environment. Major colleges like Boise State, Arkansas, Florida, Purdue, and Oklahoma State have already enacted 100% tobacco free policies.

I believe UVU should implement a similar policy. Enacting a 100% tobacco free policy would not only contribute to the clean air, but it would help the overall health of students. Second-hand smoke kills 53,800 people a year. I believe this policy would not only help smokers and non-smokers alike, but the overall atmosphere of UVU would be improved.
