Rethinking a SEXY Halloween

Reading Time: 2 minutes

As Halloween fast approaches, people are putting final touches on costumes. Or in some cases, rushing to the store to see what’s left to work with.

So if you’re one of those people who waited to get their Halloween costume, what can you expect to find in your local Halloween store? Lindsey Lohan’s character in the 2004 teen comedy Mean Girls says it best,

“In the regular world, Halloween is when children dress up in costumes and beg for candy. In Girl World, Halloween is the one night a year when a girl can dress like a total slut and no other girls can say anything about it.”

I would disagree on one aspect, however. The slut rule applies not just in the fictional girl world, but everywhere, even in Happy Valley. Known for its conservative nature, Happy Valley seems to drift away from it’s values and takes advantage of the “one night a year” rule.

I find it interesting that an area with so many religious people is still susceptible to the lingerie and animal ears phenomenon. Not everyone takes part in that tradition, but as you celebrate Halloween in Utah Valley this year, take a look at the females and their costumes. You may find yourself surprised.

I will admit that the choices are limited everywhere, and girls can’t really get away from the whole “sexy (insert occupation here)“ costumes. A couple years ago, I waited until the day before Halloween and I ended up as a sexy ladybug. To my credit, I made it a bit more appropriate by adding leggings and a long sleeved shirt, and took the opportu- nity to do something really creative with my makeup.

But just because that’s all we can find in the store, doesn’t mean that we have to go that route to look good. One of my best friends dressed up as Ursula from The Little Mermaid last year, and she looked fabulous. She used her resources and made the costume, got help from a friend for her makeup and had pretty much the best costume at every party she went to.

Every girl has the right to dress as she pleases, and celebrate this upcoming holiday as she sees fit, but I would like to challenge the female population wanting to be sexy this Halloween: Be original and be creative. One can look plenty attractive without having to show off so much skin. Keep in mind, as you try to decide between the sexy angel and sexy pirate you’re holding in your hands, putting the word sexy in front of something doesn’t make it a good costume choice.
