Spectrum–a club to discuss issues facing LGBT students at UVU that used to meet in an obscure nook tucked away in the Woodbury Business Building–has a new place to meet students and provide resources: The new LGBT Student Services Center in room 126 of the Liberal Arts Building.

The center is under the umbrella of the Multicultural Center, and is opening fall semester, 2015. As of press time, the center looks non-descript; open windows construction was nearly complete. The center joins other centers in the Multicultural suite geared toward including oft-underrepresented populations.

Students will have access to peer mentoring, one-on-one advising, a library of resources, a network of other students and peers, as well as a plethora of other services through the center.

Students can also connect with Spectrum at the center. Barney Nye, the director of Multicultural Student Services, will advise the club. Spencer Carter, a sophomore in the Computer Science major will be co-president, along with James Pulley, of Spectrum this year.

“Hopefully we’ll have banners and flyers and a public face there. As for where the meetings take place, that will depend on our members. I want the new resource center to be our public place, a place where people can find us, meet us, talk to us or learn more about us,” said Carter.

Last year, between 10 and 20 people regularly attended the Monday meetings for Spectrum; there were more members, but “schedules are hard,” Carter said. “I’m trying to incorporate more days or a more flexible schedule [for meetings.]”
