Jesse ruins Halloween: Is Halloween too overrated?

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The annual return of the spooktacular day of the year is drawing near. Halloween, the best holiday ever, as a child. I’m finding that as an adult, and maybe I’m too cynical, that this day is well past being overrated. Halloween is a day for children to enjoy, go trick-or-treating, dress up and have the “infamous costume party.”

What joy do we gain as adults, and why? No one dresses up at school, unless you’re a freshman and haven’t quite gotten the memo yet. Most employers prefer us as adults to not dress up. Truth be told, the only dressing up is for the parties, for which we drop $15-$75 on a stupid costume that is worn on that one bloody day.

My next annoyance with Halloween is the party scene. I‘ve definitely been engaged with the getting wasted on Halloween, blacking out and not remembering my night. The thing is … if you’re already into the party scene, then this doesn’t really make any difference from another typical weekend (or weeknight) for yourself. It’s just another sad excuse to drink too much and put yourself or others at risk of physical harm or sexual assault.

My final complaint about Halloween is the costumes people decide to wear. Sure, it can be fun, or funny, but it’s also ridiculous. I’ve already stated how much we tend to spend on costumes, but what about the men and women who feel the need to let this day be their day to get slutty and let loose.

My issue with this is that we have enough sex shaming and objectification of women in the world as it is, and this doesn’t benefit the cause. I’m not saying that women “can’t wear what they want” or have freedom, but let’s be real ladies … if you want to feel empowered, this sure as hell is not a way to do so. I’ve got two daughters, and I know damn well that this is not helping with their progress.  I would be worried sick knowing my babies are out there being perverted by someone or a group of people because she felt the need to be a “sexy nurse” for the year.

That being said, I don’t think men get a rite of passage for this either. It’s over-done, men, to wear the loose clothing also.

All things aside, go out, have fun, but most of all, stay safe Wolverines.
