Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once spoke of a dream, and the Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration Advisory Board is now providing the opportunity to allow the dreams of those at this university to be heard.

Along with the annual commemoration coming this January comes the call for proposals. The theme for 2011 will be “re-imagining the dream.” It is an attempt at actualizing King’s dream to fit the necessities in our times.

Because the proposals need to be turned into the board by Nov. 15, now is the time to get started on them. The board will notify students and faculty by Nov. 22 if their proposal has been accepted.

This is not a typical call for papers. The board is asking students and faculty to collaborate or individually submit papers, presentations, panels, performances or art that represents their idea of the actualization of King’s dream.

The board is interested in learning the dreams of those at this university, for dealing with issues such as poverty, environmental concerns, water and food shortages, wars, religious differences, health crises and many others or how a field of study such as art, and music can influence in these fields.

The topics can be on the local, state, national or international level.

“We would like to encourage students and faculty to form panels and use their imagination to define what they think the dream should be now,” said Dr. Julie Nichols, Coordinator in the Advisory Board.

The presentations of the submittals will take place on Jan. 12, 2011, unless otherwise notified at the time a proposal is accepted. There will be cash prizes for first, second and third place, which will be awarded on Jan. 13, 2011 at a reception and Gala.
