Softball: Wolverines fall to BYU 8-0 in five innings

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The UVU softball team’s losing streak was extended to 16 games Tuesday with an 8-0 run-rule loss to BYU on a cold, blistery day in Provo. McKenna Bull got the start for the Cougars and pitched all five innings. Three different pitchers took the mound for the Wolverines. UVU recorded two hits on the day.

BYU wasted no time getting on the board with Gordy Bravo singling through the left side on the first at-bat. Lauren Bell reached base on a throwing error and the two were brought in by a two-RBI single from Madison Merrell. In the bottom of the second, Bell hit a two-run homer to center field after Coco Bond singled to left field to start the frame.
Bailey Moore got the start for the Wolverines, but was pulled after just 1.2 innings pitched having given up six hits and three earned runs with two strikeouts and two batters walked.
Moore was replaced by Makayla Shadle who started the bottom of the third walking Caitlyn Larsen. Larsen advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Bond, advanced to third on a wild pitch and came home on a fielding error. Libby Sugg hit a solo homer in the bottom of the third before Shadle retired three straight batters to end the inning.

UVU made their second pitching change after Bond singled down the left field line and rounded the bases with the help of a wild pitch and a throwing error in the bottom of the fifth. Kellee Ramsey took the mound but only faced one batter, Bravo, whose sacrifice fly RBI ended the game due to the run rule.

Bull got the win for the Cougars to the tune of seven strikeouts, two batters walked and only two hits given up with zero earned runs.

The Wolverines will look to get back in the win column April 1 when they travel to Bakersfield, California to kick off conference play against CSU Bakersfield. Game one of the weekend series is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
