Softball: Wolverines fall short in Weber State doubleheader

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The UVU softball team was unable to prevail in a pair of close afternoon games Tuesday in Ogden, dropping their record on the season to 5-25.

Three pitchers combined to pitch the first game, a 5-3 loss. Weber State scored one run in each of the first two innings after loading the bases. In the first, Alyson Kulp was brought home when Molly Horne was walked with the bases loaded. In the second, Riana Splinter hit an RBI single.

UVU fought back to take a lead in the third inning on a Brittney Vansway RBI single followed by a Taleigh Williams 2-RBI double. The lead was short-lived, however, as the Wildcats came right back with a pair of RBI singles and a third runner coming home on a wild pitch for the final score.

WSU pitcher Kirtlyn Bohling pitched a complete game for the Wildcats, striking out six, walking three, and giving up just six hits with three earned runs.

In the back end of the doubleheader, the Wolverine comeback attempt came up just shy as they trailed 8-3 entering the seventh inning but were only able to muster three of the required runs. The Wildcats jumped on the board early and often, driving home three runs in the first inning and another two in the second.

In the third inning Brianna Gatlin came home on a fielding error, but WSU was relentless, tacking on another two runs in the bottom of the inning due to a Wolverine fielding error and a Carly White RBI. The Wildcats added their last run of the day in the bottom of the fourth.

After scoring a pair of runs in the fifth inning, UVU trailed by five going into the final inning. Tiani Hensley cut the deficit to two in one fell swoop with a three-run home run with two outs, but the Wolverines were unable to get another runner on base afterwards as the game-sealing out came in the next at-bat.

The Wolverines will return home April 8 for a doubleheader to kick off a three-game conference series against New Mexico State. The Aggies are undefeated in conference play at 3-0. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 12 p.m.
