Softball: Wolverines drop doubleheader to close Bakersfield series

After taking the first game of a weekend series against Cal State Bakersfield Friday, UVU ended the series 1-2, losing both ends of a doubleheader Saturday. The Wolverines lost the first game 7-1 and the second 4-2 to drop their conference record to 1-2 and their overall record to 5-24.

The Roadrunners struck first in the bottom of the first inning when Gonzales grounded out but brought in a run. Bakersfield scored three more in the third with Simmons coming home on a fielding error and a pair of RBIs by Pontecorvo and Hipa. They scored two in the fourth by another fielding error and a fielder’s choice before tacking on an extra run in the sixth with a Gonzalez RBI double.

The Wolverines’ only run of the first game came when De La Torre hit a solo home run in the fourth inning. It was the second straight game in which De La Torre homered.

Bailey Moore started on the mound for UVU but only pitched 2.2 innings, ending with two batters walked, five hits and four earned runs. Makayla Shadle and Kelsey Ensign combined to finish the game. Shadle pitched 2.2 innings with three strikeouts, two hits and one earned run while Ensign pitched .2 inning with two batters walked and one earned run.

Lyndsay Klimenko started for the Roadrunners, pitching five complete innings with one strikeout, two batters walked, six hits and one earned run. Sydney Raeber closed the game with two complete innings pitched and three strikeouts.

In the second game of the afternoon, CSU Bakersfield did all the scoring they needed in the second and third innings. Burt hit an RBI single and Cavazos was walked with the bases loaded to bring one home in the second inning. In the third Burt hit a two-RBI triple.

UVU fought back with Gatlin scoring on a throwing error in the fourth inning. Vansway came home on a fielding error in the seventh inning but the Wolverines were unable to complete the comeback and fell 4-2.

Moore fared better in her second outing of the day, pitching 3.2 innings with two batters walked, nine hits and three earned runs. Shadle closed the second game with 2.1 innings pitched, three strikeouts, three batters walked and one hit.

UVU will resume play in Ogden April 5 when they take on in-state foe Weber State in a doubleheader. First pitches are scheduled for 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
