Women’s soccer: UVU snaps 3-game losing streak against WAC rival

EDINBURG, Texas – The Utah Valley University women’s soccer team came away with the win in the final moments of overtime against UT Rio Grande Valley with a final score of 1-0.

UVU comes away with their first win of Western Athletic Conference play. With the last-minute win, the Wolverines improve to 7-6-1 on the season and 1-2-0 in the WAC. UTRGV drops to 9-4-1 and 1-2-0.

The golden goal came off the foot of junior forward Sydney Fitzpatrick in the 98th minute. Breanna McCarter was credited with the assist after she noticed Fitzpatrick running ahead of her passed two defenders. As Fitzpatrick got the ball in stride, Vaqueros goalkeeper Kinga Szemik came out of the box to try to stop the charge, but Fitzpatrick tapped the ball to her right and put it past her for the game-winning goal.

This marks Fitzpatrick’s fourth goal of the season, helping UVU snap a three-game losing streak. The game was dominated by UVU with a total of 19 shots and eight shots on goal, to UTRGV’s seven and three. Brooklyn Nielsen protected the box for UVU for the whole match, recording three saves on the night.

UVU moves on to New Mexico State in Las Cruses, New Mexico, looking to record its second conference win Sunday. Kickoff is set for 11 a.m. MT.
