Women’s Basketball: UVU shoots the lights out on senior night
Reading Time: 2 minutesThe UVU women’s basketball team celebrated seniors Sam Loggins and Patrice Toston Saturday in their final home game of the season, a 79-48 win over the Seattle U Redhawks. The win assures UVU at least a share of second place in the Western Athletic Conference standings going into the final game of the season.
“You want to be playing your best basketball come March,” said Head Coach Cathy Nixon. “Regardless of whatever happens it’s about us playing our best basketball.”
The Wolverines started on the right foot with a quick five points apiece from Mariah Seals and Deijah Blanks. Some stifling defense on the other side of the ball forced Seattle into just 1-of-14 shooting in the first period and UVU led 20-5 after one quarter.
UVU was on fire from range, knocking down 9-of-13 from beyond the arc in the first half and shooting 53 percent overall on their way to a 48-22 halftime lead. The Redhawks shot just 29 percent in the half.
Seattle started the second half on a 7-0 run to cut the lead down to 19 but an answering run from the Wolverines ultimately shut the door. The lead never dropped below 20 for the rest of the game.
Mariah Seals led UVU with a game-high 24 points, including six 3-point shots. Seals also had four assists, three rebounds, two steals and a block. Joining Seals in double digits were Georgia Agnew with 15 and Deijah Blanks with 12. Agnew came close to a triple-double with nine rebounds and eight assists as well as three steals.
The Wolverines’ shooting never cooled off in the game with 5 different players hitting multiple shots from beyond the arc for almost 70 percent on 16-of-23 shots. They shot nearly 52 percent overall compared to 33 percent from the Redhawks. UVU also won the rebound battle 36-28.
“It felt a little bit like an ending tonight with senior night, but really it’s just the beginning,” said Nixon in regards to the upcoming conference tournament.
The Wolverine women will play their final game of the regular season March 5 at Grand Canyon University with the second seed of the WAC Tournament possibly on the line. Tip off is scheduled for 4 p.m. with live streaming available on the WAC Digital Network.
