Western Athletic Conference play continued Saturday afternoon for the Utah Valley University volleyball team as they swept past Chicago State. The match took place in the Windy City and showed just what the Wolverines are made of as the final scores stand at 29-27, 25-23, 25-20.

In an exciting opening set that showcased 17 ties and four lead changes it was hard to decide which team was going to come out on top. Then UVU took a late lead at 26-25 off of a Kalani Norris kill. It looked like the first frame was going to end on the next point in Utah Valley’s favor, but the Cougars once again brought around a tie in stead. The CSU for that point was quickly made null as the Wolverines put the frame away two points later off of back-to-back clutch kills by Lauren Bakker.

The second set show a similar bouncing back and forth of the score, but wasn’t as thrilling as the first. Midway through the set, following a McKenna Tait ace, the Wolverines scored three unanswered points to take an 18-14 lead. The Cougars did manage to rally down though the stretch and pulled within one at 24-23,  but they couldn’t make the last minute turnaround. UVU put the set away the very next point on a CSU attack error.

The third and final frame showcased UVU’s ability to hold onto the upper hand. They jumped out to a demanding and early 13-6 lead after a beautiful ace from freshman Sierra Starley. The momentum for the match was clearly staying with the Wolverines as they made quick work of the set. They finished with a five point advantage off a Macky Treanor kill that secured the sweep.

The lady Wolverines return to Orem for three home matches next week. The first of which the team will face off against non-conference and in-state foe Weber State. The game will take place Tuesday, October 14th and starts at 7:00p.m.
