Orem, UT – The Utah Valley University women’s soccer team defeated the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley 2-0 on Sunday afternoon at Clyde Field.

The win gives the Wolverines a conference record of 4-0-1 and 9-4-1 overall. The Vaqueros dropped to 0-5-1 in conference play and 2-9-3 on the season.WSOC vs Seattle U 9-26-15-5802

The first half was dominated by UVU as they were controlling possession of the ball and creating the most goal scoring opportunities. The breakthrough came in the 40th minute; as redshirt freshman Breanna McCarter was able to collect a misplaced pass from the Vaqueros in their own half of the field. She turned to her right at the edge of the box and fired home an accurate and fast paced shot to the top right corner.

The second half was more of the same. UVU could have created more chances with their possession of the ball, but were able to seal the game in the 80th minute when junior Sheridan Fox crossed the ball into the middle of the box, which found senior Jamie Brown. She one timed her shot with her right foot into the bottom left corner. Head coach Brent Anderson recognized the team’s defensive effort in the team’s victory today.

“We’re really gelling well at the back as of late,” Anderson said. “That starts with our front line, though. They put enough pressure on the ball up front and that allows us to get organized. We also have great leadership from Jessica Duffin.”

Duffin recorded her sixth shutout of the year, but recognizes that it’s very much a team effort.

“It’s exciting to see us figuring it out at the back, especially since we’re in conference play,” Duffin said. “We’re defending well individually and as a unit, it’s great to see.”

The Wolverines women’s soccer team is back in action this Friday against Grand Canyon University. Kick off is set for 5 p.m. MST.
