Baseball: Wolverines come up empty in Washington

PULLMAN, Wash. – UVU baseball was swept by Washington State. The Cougars dominated throughout the weekend to continue the losing streak for the Wolverines.

Friday

Jackson Cofer was able to take the mound for the Wolverines. UVU opened up the scoring in the first inning with two runs from Jackson Overlund and Nick Simmons, who hit them in. It was all Cougars from then on. WSU had an answer in the first inning with four runs. The wolverines were able to hit the ball but couldn’t get much run support and only scored two more runs in the game. The Wolverines had a chance in the ninth but came up short with the bases loaded. The Cougars came out on top 8-4.

Saturday (Game One)

Jake Mayer got the start for the Wolverines in game one of the double header on Saturday. The beginning of the game was a pitchers duel and Mayer had an outstanding outing. He pitched five scoreless innings and retired 14 of the 16 batters he faced.  The sixth was a struggle for UVU as it gave up four runs. The bats were not working as the Wolverines were held scoreless dropping game two 10-0.

(Game Two)

The Wolverines had a rocky start in the second game of this double header. The Cougars just blasted out of the gate scoring six runs in the first inning. The Wolverines were able to get on the board with two runs in the third inning to close the gap to three runs. WSU didn’t let up, scoring three more runs to end the game. Zac Willis led the team going  3- 3 with two extra-base hits. The Wolverine fell short 9-2.

Sunday

Paxton Shultz started on the mound for the third time this season for the Wolverines. He started off the game giving up one run. He was able to go five solid innings giving up five hits. The Cougars took over in the sixth inning scoring eight runs to add to their lead. The Wolverines were able to score three runs but couldn’t catch up to WSU. The Wolverines lost 9-3, having been swept by the Cougars.

UVU will continue on the road next weekend in Omaha to face Creighton for a three-game series. The Wolverines are now 3-12 on the season and hoping to gain some momentum before heading into conference play.
