OREM — UVU’s bats lit up to avoid the sweep against Sacramento State Saturday afternoon. Two big home runs propelled the Wolverines to a one run victory in the final game of the series 7-6.

Kaden Schmit took the mound for UVU. He got rocked from the beginning. Sac State opened up the game with a triple in the first inning that later was hit in for the first run of the game. SSU then loaded the bases but couldn’t capitalize. The Wolverines countered with a hit by Jackson Overlund and then evened the score with a two-run blast to center field.

Schmit gave up a home run in the third inning and the Hornets went up by two. The Wolverines kept fighting as they then countered again with a Zac Willis double scoring two runs to even the score. The Hornets then committed an error to give the Wolverines the first lead of the day.

The Hornets were able to gain the lead back to go up by one run. Kade Poulsen then came up to bat for the Wolverines and hit a home run to left to regain the lead. The pitching was strong to hold the lead for the Wolverines as they pitched four scoreless innings. The defense helped the pitching as much as it could in the span of four innings. Overlund had two grabs in center that saved extra-base hits

The crowd got into the game going into the ninth inning. Patrick Wolfe came in to close for the Wolverines and continued that dominance on the mound. After hitting a batter, Wolfe was able to strike out two and a fly out to center.

The Wolverines were able to avoid the series sweep with a score of 7-6. UVU is now 9-17 overall and 4-2 in conference play. The Wolverines will remain at home for a series against Incarnate Word starting Friday at 6 p.m. MDT.
