Don’t box up that New Year’s Eve outfit quite yet — all that glitter and shine might be just what’s needed to add some extra oomph to a winter wardrobe. Sequins have been a highlight on the runways the last few seasons, and the trend has trickled down through its prerequisite red carpet appearances, paparazzi shots and magazine features to reach the fashion-conscious public.

While traditionally confined to domains such as, oh, Vegas showgirl wardrobes, sequins can easily be adapted for a night out on town and yes, even the classroom or workplace.

The key is moderation. Leave head-shoulders-knees-and-toes glitz to the pros. Don’t end up looking like a disco ball. Pair one shiny piece with more neutral or contrasting ones.

For instance, a sparkly tank works well under a blazer. Pair a leftover New Year’s dress with the oversized sweater Aunt Suzy knitted for an eclectic but chic look. If the thought of standing out is too much, try to look for either detailing or accessories. Something as simple as sequin shoes can brighten up an otherwise ordinary outfit.

How to wear it:

Day in class

Unless the goal is to detract from the lecture, this is where prudence plays its part. A bag with sequin detailing, like the velvet and sequin hobo from Charlotte Russe ($19.99), is a safe and practical choice. For a bit more fun, pair a brightly colored accessory, such as the fab sequin knit beret ($4.50 at Forever 21), with an outfit in neutral shades like black and gray.

Night on the town

More flashy pieces are a nice touch for an evening out. Dresses, such as Rodarte for Target’s sequin leopard print dress in gray ($44.99), are pretty when paired with some fun lacy tights and heels.

When there is lots of shine, jewelry should be toned down. The sequins galore knit top from Forever 21($24.80) is a fun and versatile choice that can be worn with jeans for a date or a skirt and leggings for clubbing.
