Congratulations on your decision to come to UVU! I truly believe that you made the right decision. Your decision will surely lead you to success in the future.

My name is Akwasi Frimpong.  I was born in Ghana and raised most of my life in Amsterdam in the Netherlands. I am part of the track and field team and I am a junior in school, studying Business Management with an emphasis in Marketing.

Life is about learning. Oftentimes we rush through life, overlooking the important things such as education that life has to offer along the way. At UVU, I have been blessed with the opportunity to learn from what I consider to be some of the greatest professors in the world. Professors here have helped to engage me in the learning process and have created thought-provoking lessons that have expanded the way that I see the world today.
My journey at UVU started in August 2008, after receiving an athletic scholarship from track and field coaches Scott Houle and Kirk Adamson. This journey has been the best experience in my life so far. I have to admit that I was a little bit skeptical about coming to Utah and UVU. The racial diversity and culture are very different in Amsterdam. My friends in Europe had led me to believe many myths regarding the people living in Utah and what to expect. To be honest, the myths had me a little nervous at the thought of coming to Utah.

Overall I’ve found that yes, the racial diversity in Utah may be lacking, but the people here are kind and accepting of everyone and I feel very safe in this state. I am very happy that I made the decision to come to Utah and study at UVU. I have only met good people in Utah (and at UVU) and I have been welcomed with open arms by everyone I’ve met. I have lovely friends who have treated me very well despite our cultural differences. The friends I’ve made here in Utah have really challenged me to push myself and to reach my maximum potential.

UVU has not only been growing in its student population, but in its global diversity as well. More and more international students like you and me are discovering that UVU is one of the best universities in the world to pursue an education. I wish you all the best in pursuing your career in Utah at UVU. Life is all about learning; be open-minded and learn as much as you can and I promise you, this will be the start of your lifetime journey to success.

Sincerely,

Akwasi Frimpong
