UVSC Rotary Club commits to serve

Most people have heard of Rotary Clubs, but fewer have heard of the Rotaract Club, an officially sponsored and endorsed branch of Rotary International.

Chantel Kaiser, the community service chairperson of UVSC Rotaract, said, "We maintain the same standards, traditions and practices that take place in Rotary Clubs."

Recently, the UVSC branch finished a large project that raised money for orphans in Ecuador. The funds raised were dispersed through Orphanage Support Services and went toward items like diapers, blankets and clothing.

Kaiser also revealed that the club is currently working toward sending members of the UVSC Rotaract to Zambia, Africa to help with building orphanages there.

Like regular Rotary Clubs, Rotaract requires a $10 monthly membership fee. The fee goes to various costs incurred either directly by the club, such as food at meetings and T-shirts, or the cost associated with diverse service projects that have become the trademark of Rotary International.

While the club is quite proud of its lofty international projects, it also focuses on the local community. One instance of this commitment is the requirement that every member complete at least one hour of service a week on UVSC’s campus.

The club meets on the first and third Wednesday of every month at 7 p.m. Anybody interested in learning more about the UVSC chapter can e-mail [email protected] or general information can be found from Rotary International’s Web site at www.rotary.org
