Sing and dance your way to better grades//Back to School playlist

Reading Time: 2 minutes

You’ve probably heard time and time again not to listen to music while you’re studying. Or you’ve heard to listen to the same music every time you study to help you remember the things you have learned before. Now that we are back in school, the part-time job of studying resumes.

According to recent research done by Clinical Psychologist Dr. Emma Gray, it’s not if you listen to music that affects your studying but what kind of music.

If you’re working on math homework, it’s best to listen to classical music with 60-70 beats per minute to score an average 12% higher. Try Beethoven’s Fur Elise next time you sit down to do your calculus to help you study for longer and retain more of what you learn.

For sciences, humanities or languages, music with 50-80 beats per minute can calm your mind to help with logical thought. We Can’t Stop by Miley Cyrus and Mirrors by Justin Timberlake will help you remember new facts you learn.

For subjects like English, Drama or Art, rock and pop music can help enhance creative performance. Firework by Katy Perry and I Can’t Get No (Satisfaction) by The Rolling Stones help the right side of the brain with creative thoughts.

“Music has a positive effect on the mind, and listening to the right type of music can actually improve studying and learning. Music can put you in a better frame of mind to learn,” said Dr. Gray.

Research results called the “Mozart effect” show that listening to Mozart’s music may improve mental performance.

Creating a playlist to listen to each time you study may help you remember the things you learn, in turn helping you get better grades.
