FINLAND- Finland’s ex-president Martti Ahtisaari won the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to build a lasting peace from Africa and Asia to Europe and the Middle East. The Norwegian Nobel Committee said it honored Ahtisaari for his efforts taking place for more than three decades to resolve international conflicts.
Winning money for speaking does not happen every day, although some politicians may have you think otherwise. Fortunately for the Utah Valley University student body, the Maria Clegg Jones Speech competition, sponsored by the Communications Department, comes for the second time to campus.
Uganda might seem like far away and exotic place to most Americans, but for David Ssejinja, it is his native home and life’s work. Ssejinja is currently supporting about 950 Ugandan children and widows there, most of them disadvantaged by AIDS and war. He started the Ssejinja Children’s Foundation to “give back” to his country, and to give the children what he never had growing up there.
Mark Zupan, a Paralympian who has recently won a gold medal in Beijing, has starred in “Murderball” and has written a book titled “Gimp,” spoke on Thursday in honor of disability week. “Fifteen years ago when I first got hurt, I thought my life was over,” Zupan said.

The culinary arts department at UVU did just that on Tuesday when they prepared 4,000 hot dogs during the Center for the Advancement of Leadership’s 9th annual leadership conference. “That is a lot of food,” said chef instructor Troy Wilson, C.
The Utah System of Higher Education released fall enrollment numbers of the nine stated funded colleges and universities in the state. State growth reached almost 12,000 new students in the higher education system. Utah Valley University is among the highest growth with nearly 3,000 more students enrolled than fall 2007.
Community Education Preparedness Classes Offered- UVU Community Education is offering four preparedness classes to help people cope with the unexpected. Current economic events have caused people to ask themselves if they are ready for other unforeseen events or emergencies.
Nationally-syndicated talk show host, Glenn Beck will be at UVU to receive the first Pioneer in Leadership award and to speak on “The Power of Choice” on Oct. 25 at 8 p.m. in the McKay Events Center. The BYU Management Society-Utah Valley Chapter chose to honor Beck at a public event and to hold it at UVU.
