Wolverines welcome UTPA on Hall of Fame night

When scheduling a night for Ronnie Price’s Hall of Fame induction, UVU athletic director Mike Jacobson did a smart thing in slating it during the Wolverines’ matchup with a three-win team. UVU will welcome University of Texas-Pan American, a team that has only won three games all season long. If the strategy pays off, the Wolverines will mop the floor with the Broncos in front of an eager crowd.

The Wolverines are coming off back-to-back home wins, including a thrilling one-point victory over Cal State Bakersfield. UVU is 8-2 at home this season and will look to keep up that trend when they take on UTPA.

The Broncos, on the other hand, have enjoyed their longest winning streak of the season with two straight victories over Great West Conference foes. However, their last two contests resulted in L’s, getting smacked by TCU and Texas A&M Corpus Christie.

Hopefully for Wolverine fans, the glitz of Price’s special night won’t have a negative effect on UVU. A star-studded audience made up of current Jazz and former Wolverine players will not be an atmosphere to which most players are accustomed. However, coach Dick Hunsaker will not allow his team to lose focus as they compete for the win.

Sophomore Jared Maree leads UTPA in scoring with nearly 10 points a game, while three others, Lois Valera, Matt Mierzycki and Nick Weiermiller are each averaging eight points a contest. The Broncos have won just one road game this season, a 61-50 win over Chattanooga on a neutral floor.
