UVU Collegiate top dogs

It was quite the weekend for the Wolverines as UVU hosted its third Annual UVU Collegiate for the men’s and women’s track team. As foot stepped off and on the Hal and Wing Track and Field, there was no fear in the eyes of the Wolverines as they sprinted away with outstanding results.

Although the Wolverines got a hold of eight first-place finishes last year at the UVU Collegiate event, it’s enough to say that they stayed motivated in hopes to repeat. They claimed seven first-place finishes and six second-place finishes this time around.

Utah Valley was one of eight schools in the event, competing against BYU, Southern Utah, Utah State, Weber State, Boise State, Idaho State, Westminster and University of Colorado-Mesa.

Warmed up with the sun shining, the competition began early Saturday morning and continued

throughout the day. From the steeplechase and 4 x 100 to the discus and long jump, the Wolverines competed in several events placing with top finishes.

Megan Burr had one of the top finishes of the day, winning the 100 hurdles with a time of 14:05. Mykah Heaton won the women’s long jump with a distance of 18-03, and McKell Camp-Nielsen finished with a first-place win in the women’s javelin, throwing a 155-11.75.

In addition to three top finishes from the women’s side, the men’s team took on a big role on the field, as well. Trac Norris, Chris Dorton and Chris Brower took the top three places in the men’s steeplechase. Norris took first with a time of 9:26 with Dorton (9:28) and Brower (9:37) trailing behind him.

Not only did the men rule the steeplechase, the women held on strong too. Junior Brooke Hodson-Davies took first in the steeplechase with a time of 11:01 with Jessica Wilding (11:48) taking second.

More outstanding performances were given from men’s and women’s 100 and 200 meters to long jumps, shot puts, javelins, relay races and hurdles. The UVU track and field team has lived up to the UVU Collegiate event name as they left the Hal and Wing field feeling victorious.

Overall, it was a solid day for the Wolverines.

This won’t be the last time to feel that way for Utah Valley. The season is still underway with over 10 more track meets this year. The Great West Conference has acknowledged high hopes for Utah Valley as the GWC track and field coaches picked UVU and Houston Baptist to lock down the 2013 conference titles for their annual preseason poll.

As for now, Utah Valley prepares to take on their next few events with a pair of meets in Mesa and Tempe, Ariz., at the Mesa Classic and the Sun Angel. With hopes to repeat last weekend’s triumph, the Wolverines are anticipating bigger and better results to come.
