UVU Men and Women Sweep the GWC Outdoor Track and Field Championships

Utah Valley University’s men’s and women’s track and field teams swept the Great West Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships hosted by Houston Baptist University. The UVU women’s team won with a score of 253.5 points, finishing nearly 50 points ahead of South Dakota while the men’s team won with a score of 224.5 total points, 16 points ahead of USD.

After UVU won both titles, Great West Commissioner Ed Grom named UVU head track and field coach Scott Houle the Men’s and Women’s Coach of the Year. Wolverine freshman Michael McPherson was named men’s Newcomer of the Year as well as the Athlete of the Year, while junior Tiera Zaugg won women’s Athlete of the Year accolades.

Nelson Named America Sky Co-Player of the Year

Utah Valley golfer Nick Nelson has been named the America Sky Golf Conference’s Co-Player of the Year. Nelson receives the honor along with Scott DeBorba of Sacramento State.

Nelson, who also earned all-conference first team honors, had three top-five finishes this year including a tie for first at the Cal Poly Intercollegiate in late March.

“Nick deserves all the recognition that he has received this year,” said Director of Golf Clark Rustand. “He followed up his stellar junior year with a solid senior year. This is a great honor for Nick and it is great to have Utah Valley associated with him as he receives this award.”

Nelson was on the first team with DeBorba, Armen Kirakossian (Texas-Pan American), Grant Norton (Sacramento State) and Cameron Rappleye (Sacramento State).
