Making Headlines

L.A. Lakers  After winning the NBA Championship in the 2001-2002 season, the Lakers are looking to win again for the first time since Shaq left for South Beach. The Lakers swept the Denver Nuggets to set up a series with the beloved Utah Jazz. After dismantling Jerry Sloan’s team in six games, they moved on to beat the defending champion San Antonio Spurs to schedule a return appointment to the NBA Finals.  NBA MVP Kobe Bryant has been phenomenal throughout the playoffs as he has become much more of a team player, relying on newly-acquired All-Star Pau Gasol and lanky power forward Lamar Odom to contribute in the scoring column.

Strikeouts a plenty

Recently, Randy Johnson of the Arizona Diamondbacks tied future Hall-of-Fame prospect Roger Clemens for second on the all time career strikeouts list. Johnson’s 4,672nd “K” came in a recent loss to the San Francisco Giants. In the game, Johnson fanned nine batters to tie the record. The current strikeout king is Nolan Ryan, formerly of the Texas Rangers and Houston Astros, with 5,714. As Johnson continues to battle back injuries, it appears Ryan’s record will remain intact.
