Kjar Ranked Ninth in National Preseason Poll

Intermat announced today that UVU junior wrestler Benjamin Kjar ranks ninth in the nation in the collegiate national preseason polls for the 125-pound weight division.

Kjar, who is from Centerville, Utah, has already become the schools all-time career wins leader, tallying 68 victories after only two seasons at UVU. Out of all wrestlers in the Western Wrestling Conference the Wolverine grappler is ranked the second highest in any weight division. Joe LeBlanc, ranked fifth in the nation at 184-pounds is the only higher ranked WWC wrestler.

UVU will face off against number one ranked Iowa on Feb. 6 in Vernal, Utah. The defending national champions will be eager to prove themselves again this year. On Feb. 5, UVU will square off with another top-10 program when they battle number nine ranked Boise State.

The Wolverines begin the season with the UVU Intrasquad Duals on Nov 5. Following the intrasquad, UVU will head up to Powell, Wyo., for the Northwest Open on Nov. 7, and officially begin its dual season Nov. 19 at UNC Greensboro.

Lyons Earns GWC Offensive Player of the Week

Wolverine sophomore Jaime Lyons has been named the GWC Offensive Player of the Week after scoring three goals in last Friday’s 4-0 win over North Dakota. NJIT keeper Sadie Mele earned the defensive award.

Lyons’ hat trick tied a school record for goals in a game. It was the fourth hat trick in school history and first since 2003. She leads UVU with five goals and 10 points on the season.

The Wolverines are currently in first place in the West Division with a 3-0-1 division record and host second place Houston Baptist today which stands at 2-0-2. The two teams played to a 1-1 double overtime tie earlier in the month at Houston. A UVU win today would clinch the top seed in the GWC West Division. NJIT, which is hosting the conference tournament Nov. 6-7 & 9, clinched the top seed in the east with two wins last week.
