Baseball: UVU clinches series over CSU, wins 9-4

CHICAGO—Seven Wolverine starters logged a hit as the UVU baseball team pounded out 12 hits and topped the Chicago State Cougars 9-4. After UVU relinquished an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third, Jordan Schlehuber put the Wolverines back on top for good with a two-run double to left field.

UVU improved to 32-21 overall and 17-9 in WAC play, and holds sole possession of third place in the WAC standings. With the win, the Wolverines clinched their fourth-straight series victory.

Starting pitcher Patrick Wolfe took the win as he pitched 5.0 innings and allowed four runs, three of which came in the bottom of the third inning as the Cougars took a 3-2 lead on a pair of two-out doubles.

The Wolverines answered in the in the fourth. After back-to-back doubles by Mark Krueger and Spencer Gothberg, Schlehuber then sent a double to left to score both runners. He later scored from third on a wild pitch to give UVU a 5-3 lead.

UVU put a cap on the afternoon with three runs in the eighth. Gothberg led off the inning with a single to left, then put himself in scoring position as he stole second. Gothberg came around to score from second as Jake Atkinson singled through the right side of the infield. Atkinson was then put out at second as Schlehuber reached on a fielder’s choice to shortstop.

Trevor Howell singled to left, then he and Schlehuber advanced into scoring position on a passed ball. On the next pitch, Stone Ramsey lifted a sacrifice fly to center to score Schlehuber. Greyson Bogden completed the scoring on the day with a two-out triple to center, which scored Howell and gave the Wolverines a 9-4 lead.

UVU looks to complete their third series sweep on the season with the final game of the three-game series Saturday beginning at 11 a.m. MT at Cougar Stadium in Chicago.
