Utah Valley is alive with arts and culture, if only you do a little research.
When people ask, “Where are you from?” or “Where do you live?” and you tell them Utah they usually say something along the lines of, “It’s so boring.” Or “But there is nothing to do there.”
Other states seem to have this general consensus that Utah is a place only of churches and rules. For some reason the dominant religious emphasis makes people think that isn’t fun, and that couldn’t be further from the truth.
Provo has specifically been ranked as one of the best places to live due to it’s great art scene. Utah Valley has given birth to some big names in the music industry, such as: Imagine Dragons, Neon Trees, David Archuleta, and many more.
Salt Lake City hosts one of the best Comic Con’s in the world, according to Marvel creator Stan Lee. Artists saturate the county, evident by the large section of Artist’s Ally that Comic Con features, and the multiple meet up groups for rookie and veteran artists to attend. There are more theater performance’s put on a month than any one person can attend. The Hale Center Theater and UVU’s School of the Arts constantly boasts a great calendar year, featuring community favorites and innovative shows.
If you’re looking for more of a party scene, every year Center Street in Orem shuts down for a giant college block party, with over 4,000 people in attendance.
Want to listen to some new music? Provo’s Rooftop Concert Series, which is free, runs from May to September. Another place that you can always count on for new music is The Velour, which also hosts their very own battle of the bands.
If you’re looking for some more dance exposure then check out UVU’s hip hop team m.o.s.I.A.C, which just celebrated it’s fifth anniversary. If you want to do some dancing yourself head over to Salsa Chocolate in Provo, which features free Latin dancing lessons every Thursday for an hour before it becomes a night club, complete with live music.
Maybe you just want to sit back and enjoy a relaxing funny atmosphere; Comedy Sportz and ImprovBroadway will have you laughing after a stressful day.
Whatever you love, Utah Valley has something for everyone. If you take the time to explore your city you will discover things you love. The next time someone turns their nose up at living in Utah let them know how cool our city really is.
