The new club on the block: Tap Club at UVU

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Beginning this semester, three sisters: Isabella White Arnett, Hannah White and Alexandra White are bringing tap dance to campus through Tap Club every Friday at 1 p.m. in the Physical Education building.

The sisters are current students here at UVU. Arnett currently acts as club president with her two sisters as co-presidents. Tara Jo Meredith, dance education major, is also a member of the club presidency as the social media advisor.

Tap Club is open to all members, even those with no previous dance experience. “I had no idea how to tap dance before this and I feel like I’ve learned a lot. It’s a lot of fun,” said Josh Van Wagoner, club member and sophomore in modern dance.

The club’s environment is open and inviting because it is more than a dance technique class. It’s also a club to have fun and to make new friends. “We’ve had awesome people come and join. We’ve had people not only from the dance department, but the theatre department and people who just saw our posters and wanted to join,” said Elizabeth Crandall, current club member and sophomore in dance education.

With the club having a great start, members have big plans. This month, Tap Club was selected to compete in UVU’s Best Dance Crew. Unfortunately, the event was cancelled, but that is not stopping Tap Club. At the end of each semester, the dance department holds a Doundounba, where all dance technique classes come together to perform. Doundounba will be held April 27 in PE 152 at 10:15 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. Tap Club plans to make an appearance.

“It would be really awesome to perform in front of all the faculty,” said Arnett. Tap Club was started because many UVU students had expressed interest, and now they are excited to show the dance department what great tap performers they are, said Arnett. The club welcomes any student who has an interest in learning to tap, and it’s never too late to start tapping.
