Five takeaways from the 2017 men’s soccer schedule

Photo by Julie Ostler The UVU men’s soccer team announced its 2017 schedule April 14. It features eight nonconference matches before the beginning of WAC play. Here are five takeaways from the rundown: To be the best, you have to beat the best It’s clear from this schedule that UVU wants to avoid another snub from the NCAA tournament. The Wolverines failed to claim an at-large bid to the tournament following the 2016 season despite earning the title of regular-season WAC champions. Critics pointed to a weak schedule as a possible reason UVU was left out. This season, the...

For NCAA basketball teams, continuity is king

Photo by Sarah Sanchez When the field of 68 teams in the 2017 NCAA March Madness tournament was whittled down to the Final Four, basketball fans looking to get a glimpse at future high-end NBA talent were left with little to be excited about. With all the projected NBA draft lottery talent in the college ranks in the 2016-17 season, it didn’t translate to big-time postseason success. 2016-17 season marked by historic highs, consistent struggles

The win marked the biggest deficit overcome in Wolverine basketball history; it was just five points shy of tying the biggest comeback in NCAA history. Three days after the Denver game, the Wolverines went into the Marriott Center and shocked BYU with a dominating 114-101 statement win. They sank the most 3-point shots in a single game...

NFL Combine is not indicative of collegiate talent

Photo courtesy of Michael Tipton Last week, 330 of the top college football players from the 2016 NCAA season gathered in Indianapolis, Indiana for the NFL Scouting Combine. There, they competed in a variety of speed, strength and agility events with professional scouts for all 32 NFL teams present to gauge their athleticism. It’s been cynically dubbed by some as the ‘Underwear Olympics.’ The problem, and the source of the cynicism, is that none of these contests, from the 40-yard dash to the bench press to various jumping events, are at all indicative of what these players can do...
