Wolverines 8 game homestand includes win over Syracuse

By Josh Kiel   The UVU volleyball team concluded their eight-game home stand to begin the season, finishing with a 6-2 record including a win over Syracuse.   “It’s been great, I am very pleased as far as where we are after the home stand,” head coach Sam Atoa said. “We have done a good job on staying focused on each opponent and playing hard, it’s been very encouraging.”   The opponents in the home streak included Michigan, Syracuse, Illinois State, Cal Poly, UC Bakersfield, BYU-Hawaii, Santa Clara, and Northern Arizona.   One of the highlights was UVU’s come-from-behind, 3-2 victory over Big East foe Syracuse. In the match the Wolverines fell behind early, losing the first two sets going into the break. They followed up the poor early performance with an impressive second half, culminating in an exciting fifth set comeback victory.   “I was happy with execution that we expected from ourselves right at the beginning of that third set,” Atoa said. “[We] realized that for [us] to be able to be in control, we have to stay focused on our game, and we did that very well. In the fifth set we kept our composure even when they made a run and we were down 10-12, we only gave them one more point and we were able to score five more points.”   The Syracuse victory...

Roster continues to evolve

The UVU volleyball has now played in four matches this year. Through them they have learned a few things. One is that Chelsey Heaps is ready to step up in her senior campaign. She leads the team in kills, kill ratio, and is tied for second-most digs. She has stepped into her leadership role seemingly without difficulty. Another is that youth is and will be dominating this years’ team. Eleven of the sixteen members of this years’ team are underclassmen, leading to heavy amounts of playing time for players like Brookelyn Campbell and Lindsay Barker, both of whom played significant minutes as freshmen. Campbell has led the team in assists in every game, totaling 104 of the team’s 133 assists for the year. The next closest player is Chelsey Heaps, who has eight. Even playing sick Wednesday against the Slovenian national team, Campbell had 42 of the team’s 47. She also leads the team in digs with 35 and is second on the team with 14 blocks. Lindsay Barker is third on the team in kills, second in kill ratio, and third in digs. She has been playing with a hurt right arm that could slow her down but she is showing no signs of it affecting her too much. Erica Nish, the lone junior on this team, is showing her all-round game as well. She leads team in...

Volleyball tops Santa Clara, takes 2nd at La Quinta Invitational

In the finale of The La Quinta Invitational Saturday night, the UVU Wolverines volleyball team faced off against the Broncos from Santa Clara University. The Wolverines won 3-1 (25-20, 21-25, 25-21, 25-22). All four sets included early leads that were later surrendered for compelling finishes.   In the first set UVU jumped out to a quick 10-6 start. They were assisted by the mistakes at the net of the visiting Broncos. In spite of them, however, UVU allowed Santa Clara to fight their way back into the match before pulling away to a 22-16 lead.   The Wolverines distributed the kills out evenly amongst their big four in the first set as Chelsey Heaps, Lindsay Barker, Erica Nish and Jaicee Kuresa notched three apiece. Using their combined efforts of the Wolverines managed to finish off the broncos with a solid kill and the score of 25-20.   In the second set the Wolverines jumped out to another quick start at 4-1 and maintained the lead until leading 11-5. SCU overcame some early miscues, however, and fought their way back into the match. The Wolverines let the lead slip to 17-14, got a side out, then lost the lead entirely as the Broncos tied it at 18-18 and going on to win 21-25.   The third set began with UVU in a 1-3 hole as the Broncos looked to capitalize...

Michigan Wolvereines top Utah Valley in three sets

Utah Valley began tournament play Friday night against the Michigan Wolverines. Mistakes were the theme early for UVU as they lost 0-3 (17-25, 17-25, 25-27). After getting out to an even UVU began to struggle with the serving ability of Michigan. “We really struggled passing the ball,” observed Coach Sam Atoa, “especially in those first two sets.” On average this year the Wolverines have made 2.2 receiving errors per match. The difference in competition level was immediately apparent as their error average nearly tripled in this match, (6.3 errors per set). Michigan jumped from a 3-3 tie to an...

Volleyball loses to Slovenian national team in four sets

The Wolverine volleyball team played an exhibition game against the Slovenian National Team Wednesday night losing 3-1 (21-25, 21-25, 25-17, 19-25). The game was the return of Jaicee Kuresa. She got four kills, an assist, and four digs in her debut match.   As a team the Wolverines fell behind early in the first set 2-7 and struggled to overcome the early deficit. At one point they were down 9-14 and struggled with the front line play of the Slovenians. In atypical fashion the Wolverines struggled to score on long vollies, something they had been doing well at in...
