Six errors costly in loss

Despite a three-run home run from senior Kade Andrus in the 8th inning and scoring seven runs over the final three innings, the Utah Valley baseball team dropped the first game of a double header 14-9 to Saint Mary’s.

Down 10-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning, UVU attempted to make a comeback.  They would score two runs in the seventh and then three runs on the Andrus home run in the eighth to bring the score to 10-7 but that was as close as they would get.  The Gaels would respond with four runs in the top of the ninth inning to increase their lead to 14-7 and even though UVU scored two runs in the bottom half of the ninth inning it wasn’t enough as they fell at home.

UVU collected 13 hits with Spencer Gothberg and Jordan Schlehuber leading the way with three hits each.  Schlehuber, Gothberg, and freshman Tate Harding each drove in two runs to lead the UVU offense.

Freshman Jackson Cofer took the loss on the mound as he gave up six runs (three earned), eight hits, and two walks while striking out three in five innings of work.

The UVU defense committed six errors and gave up nine stolen bases.

Johnny York picked up the win for the Gael’s on the mound as he went six innings giving up two earned runs on eight hits and striking out 10.  Overall, the Saint Mary’s pitching staff combined to strike out 14 Wolverine hitters.

UVU will look to bounce back in the second game of the doubleheader.  First pitch is scheduled for 3:45 pm MT.
