It comes but once a year; it’s almost here and it’s sure to bring lots of singles to tears. Whether you plan on vegetating in front of the TV, spending time with your cat or eating yourself into a coma, please, at least don’t spend the day alone.

Valentine’s Day isn’t like those lame holidays where all of the businesses close. Nearly everything is open, which means you have options to get yourself out of the house.

That is if you avoid the movies, every sit-down restaurant, driving through the canyon, walking down the street and getting on social media.

Let’s face it, anywhere your poor, single soul goes, love will be there. As they say, “Love is in the ground” or … something like that. Not to worry though, you can still have a semi-OK day. The trick isn’t to avoid it, it’s to enjoy it.

If you’re single, it’s time to get together with your family and friends and forget about romantic love.

Fellow UVU single, Mckensey Bevan, plans on spending her day with family. If she didn’t have those plans she “would have a movie night with (her) single friends and go to dinner, somewhere delicious like Texas Roadhouse and just have fun with them.”

Utah Valley has many single- friendly eateries, some of which include: Noodle’s and Company, J Dawgs, The Hungary Hawaiian and Zaxby’s. The best part being that all orders can be made to go. If you’re in the mood for something a bit fancier, restaurants like Applebee’s and Chili’s have a takeout menus as well.

You can also have a movie night and eat delicious food while watching “300”, or the least sappy movie you can think of. Any horror film will do. Light-hearted, non-romantic movies you could watch while eating tons of sweets without guilt are: “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory”, “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”, and “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs”. Or you could safely watch “Horrible Bosses”, “Dinner for Schmucks”, “Anchorman”, “The Other Guys”, “White Chicks”, or “Tropic Thunder”.

Freshman Rylan Harker said, “What I would do if I was single, which I’m not, is I would get together with other single friends and have a game night, all of us lonely single people together drinking soda and eating food.”

If a more active day is what you had in mind, go bowling or better yet play laser tag. Somewhere that has both is Seven Peaks Fun Center in Lehi.

If that isn’t the atmosphere you’re looking for, Jack and Jill Lanes is nearby and they have the tastiest, greasiest onion rings you’ll ever have.

For laser tag only, Laser Assault in Provo is an option. Provo Beach Resort has laser tag and bowling as well as an arcade and ropes course. If you can find a resort with decent snow, night boarding or skiing is also always an option.

Enjoy this Valentine’s Day and don’t spend it alone. Who knows, you might actually meet another single soul during your activities, crazier things have been known to happen.
