In the second game of a doubleheader for Utah Valley University Friday night, the Lady Wolverines came from behind to defeat visiting conference opponent Bakersfield by a score of 2-1. The win marks UVU’s third consecutive victory and second in a week against Bakersfield.

Bakersfield came into the match looking to avenge last Friday’s loss to UVU as it took control of the match with an early 1-0 lead. Mid-fielder Maja Green put Bakersfield ahead in the 4th minute of the match when she scored on a header off the corner kick taken by Jess Moorehead.

After trailing for much of the match, the experienced Lady Wolverines showed their and determination to score two goals in the final 25 minutes of action in the team’s comeback victory. UVU mid-fielder Kasandra Anderson evened the score in the 65th minute after her shot from outside the box went into the high left corner of the net.

UVU’s experience came through for the team as UVU senior mid-fielder Kim Stratford helped lead her team to the 2-1 victory with her game winning goal. At the 71 minute mark, Stratford found the back of the net when she rebounded the ball after teammate Jamie Brown’s shot attempt deflected off Bakersfield keeper Tori Ornela.

The veteran UVU defensive unit in the second half completely shut-down the Bakersfield offensive attack. After allowing 4 shots in the first half, including the early goal, UVU did not allow Bakersfield to get off a shot attempt in the final 45 minutes of play.

UVU women’s soccer improves its overall record to 8-4-2 in the regular season. The team holds a 3-1-0 record in WAC play and remains unbeaten at home with a record of 6-0-2 at Clyde Field.

The lady Wolverines next face conference opponent Grand Canyon at 2 p.m. MT Sunday at Clyde Field.
