Pack like a pro

Reading Time: 2 minutes

As summertime comes to a close, it’s time to fit in that last summer hoorah before getting back to business as classes start.  Whether it’s a last minute road trip or you plan on jetting off to the beach, you need to make sure to pack just right.

Carry on essentials:  Whether flying or driving it’s a smart idea to take two bags, one that can be stowed out of the way in a trunk or overhead compartment, and one to keep you entertained through the drive or flight.  Always pack some kind of music with headphones or a book for times when you’re growing weary of your travel companions (we all know it happens).  Make sure to keep anything you need quick access to in your carry-on, like your wallet, a water bottle and snacks.

Think about your bag:  Make sure to always start with appropriate luggage.  You don’t want to have to try to wheel a suitcase through the dirt if you’re going camping.  You might want to fly with a carry-on instead of having to check a bag for time and moneys sake.

Plan ahead:  Whether you’re going away for a weekend or taking a full week to getaway, do think through what you’re going to need before you start packing.  We’ve all been on trips and realized nothing we have makes a full outfit.  Try to pack pieces that can be used different ways.  A simple V-neck can look good with jeans or shorts and sandals if you’re going for a casual look, but throw on a jacket and dress shoes and you’re instantly ready for a night out on the town.  A basic checklist might looks like this:

  • 2-3 t-shirts/tank tops
  • 1-2 long sleeved shirts
  • 1 dressy top (you know you’re going to go out at least once)
  • 2-3 pairs of shorts
  • 1 pair of jeans
  • 3-4 pairs of shoes (sandals and shoes that are good for walking in are musts, and one pair of dressier shoes just in case)
  • Swimsuits and cover up

Obviously this list will vary based on where you’re jetting off to. The board shorts and bikinis are better if left for the beach than hiking through the desert.  Make sure to check the weather before packing so you’re prepared if it looks like rain.

Stay conscious of how much room you have for packing and leave bulkier items at home, particularly if you plan on bringing home new souvenirs.

Don’t forget the little things:  Countless trips are started with a run to the nearest drugstore after remembering that you forgot your toothbrush, shampoo, deodorant, or some other little item.  Double check that you have everything you’ll need to ensure people will still want to come within 10 feet of you after the first day or two.

Vacations are perfect for freeing your mind and enjoying the place and people you’re with. Avoid stress by organizing your packing and you are good to go.
