Friday night on Main Soccer Field the Utah Valley Wolverines defeated the Bakersfield Roadrunners in their Western Athletic Conference opener. The final score of the match put UVU as the winners, 2-1.

It only took the Wolverines 47 seconds to make their first goal. Defender Melanie Ostler sent a long pass to forward McKell Salmon who put the ball in the back of the net for her first goal of the season. The goal was made off of a beautiful shot from eight yards out.

After that exciting start the game took on a more normal tone as it remanned scoreless for the next 29 minutes. Bakersfield finally managed to respond to the early UVU goal when Hedda Regefalk tied the match. The Roadrunner goal came when Taylor Wheeler converted a five-yard pass to Regefalk, who then snuck one past Jessica Duffin.

The game winning goal came in the 55th minute. Midfielder Jamie Brown received a long cross through the Bakersfield defense from defender Kallie Suesue. Brown collected the ball and sent it into the net for her second goal of the season.

The excitement didn’t end there as the Roadrunners almost tied the game again with just 2:30 left in the contest. Jess Moorehead found a slight opening in the UVU defense and was able to send a masterful shot just inside the 18. Out of almost no where Duffin appeared with an impressive save to secure the Wolverine win.

The lady Wolverines will continue their WAC play on the road at Grand Canyon on Sunday, October 5th at 2:00p.m. MT.
