Aggressive Game Ends in a Draw for Women’s Soccer

In a highly aggressive game Utah Valley University’s women’s soccer team takes a draw with Boise State University today on Clyde Field. The game was decided after going into double over time with a final score of 1-1.

The Wolverines looked to be taking the lead at the start of the first half by keeping the ball on Boise’s side of the field. That didn’t last long as the Broncos found their pace and started to push the ball on to Utah Valley’s side. It looked like Boise was going to take the lead until UVU’s Taylor Kirk scored the first goal of the game. In the 35th minute Melanie Ostler assisted Kirk’s shot form 10 yards out that glanced of the left post and went in for the goal.

The Broncos tried to rally back but lost their edge after Baylee Blaser went down after a miss step and had to be carried off the field in the last 5 minutes of the half. It looked like their teammate’s injury got in the heads of the lady Broncos. Balser wasn’t the only casualty of the game. The changing of the sides at the half brought a new aggression from Boise. The second half saw two more players hurt and escorted off the field. In the 63rd minute UVU’s Lexi Fells went down in a mess of bodies battling for possession; she walked off the field with aid. Then there was some excitement in the box as UVU’s McKell Salmon slide in an attempt to keep the ball away from Boise’s  keeper Bailey Anderson. The slide resulted in a red card for Salmon as Anderson took the brunt of it in the face.

Just a few minutes before the drama in the box the Broncos managed to slide past UVU’s defense and knot up the game. Kelli Drobney placed the shot in with just over four minutes left in regulation. Neither team were able to sink an other shot therefore forcing the game into over time.

In both overtime periods Boise kept the ball mainly on the Wolverines side. UVU’s defiance held under the attack of the Broncos who managed to get off the only shot during the 20 extra minutes. Goalkeeper Jessica Duffin lead the Wolverines in there campaign to hold off Boise as she finished the game with six saves.

This was the second game in the lady Wolverines seven-game homestand. The team will next face off against Wyoming on Friday, September 5th at 7:30 p.m. MT.
