Expectations for freshmen usually don’t include making an impact in their first season at the collegiate level. With things like having to adjust to the speed of the game and the athleticism of opposing teams, the first year of competition is often a learning curve for most athletes. However, UVU women’s volleyball freshman Macky Treanor has not needed to adjust much as she earned the first-ever WAC player of the week award the first week of her college career.

Treanor is a native of Salem, Utah and has played volleyball most of her life. She had major success among the high school ranks. Treanor was named the State MVP both her junior and senior seasons, was a three-time region MVP, led her team to second and third-place finishes at state and also helped her team to two region titles and an undefeated season in region play her senior year.

Volleyball seems to be running through the Treanor family blood line. Her mother Kathy is a former All-American who played at UVU, and her cousin is Misty May Treanor who won three gold medals in beach volleyball at the Olympics. Her pedigree has surely helped her make the transition to the college level with ease.

UVU women’s volleyball is a program that has experienced success, winning many conference championships, which has appealed to many of the talented players around the state. For both parties, Treanor joining the team was a perfect fit, since it is close to her hometown and comes with a rich winning tradition.

“I have a big family, so it’s nice to have them close,” explained Treanor. “I love the coaching staff, and I love the girls. It seemed like a good place.”

Treanor made the right choice in joining UVU.

When the team opened the season on Aug. 30, Treanor made her presence known by tallying 46 kills, 27 digs and three service aces over three matches in the La Quinta Inn & Suites Invitational. Because of her play, she also earned all-tournament team honors.

Treanor also posted WAC-bests of 5.11 kills per set and a .447 hitting percentage in her first weekend of collegiate volleyball.

In her first match, she recorded her first career double-double with a team-high 10 kills and 12 digs. Treanor then set a program single-match three-set record with 20 kills in a winning effort against North Dakota State. Treanor almost ended the weekend with another double-double against No. 24 Wichita State, finishing with 16 kills and nine digs. Her stellar play led to her being voted the WAC player of the week, the first time in UVU history

“It was flattering honestly,” Treanor said. “I always try my hardest to do the best that I can, and it was really awesome. I was kind of surprised.

With all the success that Treanor has had on the high school leve and the support system she has in the stands, it makes sense that she has transitioned almost seamlessly into college athletics.
